It is not often that a restaurant in tony Pacific Heights falls into the class of affordable dining", but Galette does. It is part of a small chain of French ventures including Bay Bread, Chez Nous (also in Pacific Heights), & La Boulangerie de Polk.

Galette is small, but with high ceilings and walls plastered with cartoons and French sport pages, making for a lively, friendly, informal scene.

They serve crepes Britanny style, i.e., made of buckwheat, hence galettes. They are made savory-style suitable for lunch and dinner and dessert-style, with fillings of ice cream jams, fruit. Recently, breakfast has been added, with appropriate savory and sweet crepes, as well as egg dishes.

Breakfast at Galette includes scrambled eggs or omelette, with roasted potato, choice of Gruyere, goat cheese, blue cheese, ham, smoked salmon $6, fried eggs (3) with toast, roasted potato, & choice of bacon, Canadian bacon, or sausage $6, Greek yoghourt with honey, fruits & nuts $6, and choice of savory or sweet crepes $4-9, e.g., savory ham & cheese $5, with egg $7, savory smoked salmon $8.50, half baguette with butter, jam or nutella $1.75., croque monsieur $3.40.

Lunch, dinner Include appetizers, salads, soups, e.g., Britanny fish soup with mussels, gruyere, garlic, & croutons $9, Fishermans salad $6.50/9, charcuterie plate $6, cheese plate $6.50, tartine with tomato, garlic, prosciutto $5, Galette salad (mesclum, ham, gruyere, egg, tomato, asparagus, pine nuts) $6.50, and choice of savory or sweet crepes $6.50/9, Caesar salad $5.50, with chicken $8.50, mussels mariniere or provencale $9, Nicoise tuna sandwich $6.50, and choice of savory or sweet crepes $6-9.

Savory Crepes Include smoked salmon, creme fresh, & herbs $8.50, Galette with potato, onions, pancetta, brie $9, ham & cheese $6, seasonal vegetables $7, goat cheese, tomato, shallots, olive oil $8, spinach, free-range chicken, mustard sauce $8.50, shrimp, scallops, mussels, mushrooms, flambeed with calvados $9.50.

Sweet crepes e.g., salted butter and vanilla sugar $4, with lemon & honey $5, with nutella $6, crepes suzettes flambeed with Grand Marnier $7, banana split $9, with ice cream build your own, $1.50 per scoop, chantilly or chocolate sauce add $1.

Beverages include French beer $4.50 (12%), French apple cider, cup $3, pitcher $12, Kir Breton $3, wine sauvignon blanc $4 glass, $14 bottle, Cotes du Rhone $4 glass, $14 bottle, Cotes du Provence $5.50 glass, $22 bottle. Note: the $14-bottle wines are well-chosen, a good value.

Note: A suggested lunch or dinner for two at Galette could consist of a shared savory crepe or special salad, and a shared sweet crepe. Of course, you can live it up by starting with the fish soup.
