Favorite Chinese Restaurants
There are literally hundreds of Chinese restaurants in San Francisco. Most are familyor relativeowned and operated, and provide good to excellent food, at low prices. Here is one of my favorites: Two can eat well at dinner, family-style, by choosing one appetizer or soup (a bowl is a starter for up to 4), and one entree per person. Often, the entrees are so large that one appetizer or soup and two entrees are enough for three persons. This keeps the price under $10 per person. With the special lunch the price is under $5 per person.

Open 7 days, Sun-Thurs 11:30am-9:30pm,
Fri-Sat 11:30am-10pm.

Hunan cuisine specialties, large seafood menu. This is one of my favorite Chinatown restaurants, and has been around for almost 20 years. It is more elegant than most restaurants in the area, the cuisine is more refined, and prices tend higher than the competition. One friend of mine used to come to Hunan Homes regularly for crispy orange beef which he found superior to the many others that he tried. This is also a favorite of tour groups, since it can serve and seat many, in an attractive milieu.

Special Lunch, Mon-Fri (except holidays), 11:30am-2:30pm, $4.50-5.50, includes hot & sour soup, rice, fruit, tea, & choice of 19 entrees, e.g., Hunan Homes smoked duck $4.75, chicken with black mushrooms $4.75, beef with tender greens $4.75, bean curd with prawns $5.50, assorted vegetables $4.75.

The a la carte menu is very broad. Here are some examples:

Appetizers, soups, e.g., egg rolls (4) $4.25, fried prawns (8) $6.95, hot & sour soup, bowl, $4.95.

Fowl, beef, pork, e.g., chicken with snow peas $7.95, spiced garlic beef $8.95, Hunan smoked pork $7.95.

Seafood (30 dishes), e.g., snow peas & prawns $9.95, sweet & sour fish $9.50, prawns, scallops, bean curd in iron pot $9.95.

Vegetables (12 dishes) , rice, chow mein, e,g., assorted vegetables $6.95, beef chow mein $5.50, shrimp fried rice $5.95.

An interesting 7-dish family dinner for 4 persons, $11.50 per person, includes egg roll, won ton soup, cashew-nut chicken, Mongolian beef, assorted vegetables, steamed rice, tea, & fruit a veritable feast. For 5 persons, a prawn dish is added, for 6 persons, sizzling seafood deluxe is also added, making it 9 dishes in all. Other, more elaborate family dinners are $12.50 & $14.50 per person. (Of course, the price adds up when you add 8.25% tax, tip, and, maybe, a drink). These are especially suited for special occasions, such as a birthday, anniversary etc.

Drinks. Imported beer is $3.25, domestic 2.95, house wine $3.50 glass, $8 half-carafe, $12 carafe.

Two hours validated parking at nearby Holiday Inn garage
