Pacific Café
7000 Geary Blvd (corner 34th Ave)
387-7091. 5-9:30pm weekdays, Sat-Sun to 10:30pm.
The Pacific Cafe is a relatively small place, pleasantly decorated, which has been devoted to seafood for the past 28 years (established July 4, 1974). They take no reservations, so at 5:30pm there is always a line outside the door, most with a glass of house wine in hand (courtesy of the house), chatting away. Once seated, another glass of white wine is offered on the house, a generous gesture.

Appetizers are good-sized and reasonable. e.g., Pacific oyster cocktail $4.95, Bay shrimp cocktail $4.95, clam chowder $3 cup, $4.95 bowl, dinner salad $4. (These prices are a few dollars below those in similar-quality restaurants).

Entrees served with soup or salad, country-fries, rice or steamed potatoes. English sole $13.32, sautéed calamari steak $14.49, filet of sole Newburg (curried crab & shrimp) $15.37, fried Pacific oysters $15.73, turbot baked in parchment (a favorite) $16.48, fried scallops $16.48, prawns scampi-style $17.51, 10-11-oz grilled rib steak $17.74 (the only non-seafood dish on the menu).

Desserts Cheesecake or chocolate mousse torte $4.25.

Beverages House wine, white or red, $4 glass, $6 half-bottle, $10 bottle. Beer $4, house champagne $3.50 glass, bottle Piper Sonoma champagne $24. Bottled wines are reasonably marked up, e.g., Clos du Bois Chardonnay $11 half-bottle, $20 bottle, Sauvignon Blanc Kenwood similarly-priced. Corkage $5 (consumer-friendly).

Editors note: I've been eating at the Pacific Cafe on Geary since the late '70s. It's one of the places I take out of town visitors and they always enjoy it.
