Great Takeout Sandwiches
Including Fish & Vegetarian

Part 1

Sandwiches probably provide more nourishment for Americans than any other type of fast food, more than pizzas, hamburgers, and tacos together. Some sandwich places now feature low-fat, low-carb, high meat, and most sandwiches provide a substantial meal for one person, while large sizes at take-out places can feed two or more persons, at a very low cost for each. At lunch, most restaurants serve large sandwiches, often with fries, in the price range of $5-10 – plus tax and tip, of course – a good-sized lunch for one person. The same sandwich at take-out would be half the price, or less.

All prices include tax (!)

This is my all-time favorite for takeout, and, arguably, the best in San Francisco. It is also a bonanza for fish lovers and vegetarians. I first reviewed The Sandwich Place over 10 years ago. It was very good then, is better and more bountiful now. It is also open longer than before, most days to 5pm. They bake their own bread daily – especially, their special wide French rolls – and buy prime meat and other products from a number of well-known vendors. Sandwiches are made in two basic sizes, Regular and Giant, on choice of bread or on their own special wide French bread, with several layers of fillings, with mayonnaise and mustard, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles (hot, if desired). The Regular is a satisfying meal for one, and the Giant a hearty meal for two, especially if a cup of soup or a small salad is added. Prices have changed little over the past few years, and the menu has been much enlarged, e.g., with fish and breakfast sandwiches, and more side dishes, e.g., soups, salads, bagels, hot dogs, fresh juices, and cookies. Six different vegetarian and two fish sandwiches are offered!
