The White Horse Restaurant was listed in the first edition of my book, San Francisco on a Shoestring (1982), over 20 years ago, and is still going strong.

It is one of the few elegant restaurants with good food at affordable prices. Their specialty – steaks and prime rib. It is British elegance.

Appetizers and salads, include soup of the day $3.25, house salad $3.95, Caesar salad $4.95, shrimp cocktail $4.95.

Pastas and light dinners, include angel hair pasta with seasonal vegetables $8.95, linguini with prawns, spinach, tomatoes and basil pesto $11.50, brochette of prawns and vegetables, with spicy mango sauce $9.95.

Entrees, served with seasonal vegetables, include southern fried chicken with country gravy and mashed potatoes $10.50, Lord Beresford meat loaf with house-made ketchup and chive-mashed potatoes $10.95, maple-cured pork chop with ginger applesauce and wild rice $11.50, grilled salmon with Tobiko caviar and tarragon tartar sauce $13.50.

New Zealand rack of lamb with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables $13.95, filet mignon with mushroom and shallot-cabernet sauce, served with chive-mashed potatoes $13.95, T-bone steak with balsamic vinegar butter and chive-mashed potatoes $14.95.

Prime rib dinner $16.95, Lord Beresford cut of prime rib, soup or mixed green salad, fresh vegetables, baked potato, and Yorkshire pudding. in savory au jus, coffee or tea.

Desserts, all $4.25, change frequently, e.g., chocolate sundae, pumpkin cheesecake, raspberry torte.

House Wine, $3 glass, red or white, $12 bottle. Name-brand red and white wines begin at $20.00. Corkage 8.00.
