New Years Festival crowd

San Francisco's 2003 Chinese New Year Parade got a little damp with rain increasing as the parade continued.

Participants near the begining where most of these photos were taken alternately put on coats, then removed them and wore see through rain wear, or were optimistic and let their special costumes show.

This was the year of the Ram or Sheep and many costumes and floats reflected the theme.

I'm always amazed at how many young girls and boys participate in the Chinese New Year Parade, and how well behaved they are during the long wait for the parade to get started.

There seemed to be more Dragons and Lions this year than there were last year. Many local high schools were represented with drill teams or marching bands. One drill team came from Atlanta Georgia for the parade.

The Chinese New Years Festival was well attended by people from the neighborhood and around the world. Several streets were closed to vehicle traffic and many organizations set up booths.

Traditional Chinese New Year plants, and fruit were popular as were the booths supplied by the nearby Nevada casinos.

Enjoy an evening in Chinatown, including North Beach and dinner, capped off with a ride to Treasure Island to view the San Francisco skyline at night.
