San Francisco Restaurants reviewed by Louis Madison

Louis Madison’s
Affordable Dining in San Francisco

Louis Madison's Last Review

The December 15, 2005 review signals the end of Louis Madison's contribution to iNeTours.com, one that will be sorely missed.

I had the good fortune to be introduced to Lou by a someone who had seen my first attempts at producing this site when only San Francisco information—and not a lot of it—was online. They said "You have to meet Louis Madison." without really telling me why so I called him and we discussed his experience writing and publishing San Francisco on a Shoestring—10 editions beginning in 1982.

Lou suggested writing restaurant reviews for iNeTours.com even though I couldn't afford to pay for articles at the time. When I later asked him why he did it, Lou mentioned keeping busy in retirement and the mental and physical exercise involved, but the main reason was to provide a service to the many people, especially visitors to The City, who have the mistaken impression that San Francisco is a city where you can not eat affordably. Lou's first bimonthly review was posted on September 2, 2001.

Lou and his wife Annemarie have served the San Francisco community for many years and would like to thank iNeTours.com visitors for reading and referring Lou's reviews and for the many letters of appreciation he has received.

I'd like to take this opportunity to say, "Thank you, Lou for five years of restaurant reviews and so much more."

Affordable Dining in
San Francisco–a Primer

Lou's introduction
to affordable
San Francisco restaurants

"I limit myself to those San Francisco restaurants where I judge the food to be of good or excellent quality, and affordable or very-affordable."
"It must be emphasized that in choosing a San Francisco restaurant the first criterion is quality. One does not have to sacrifice quality for price.”

San Francisco is known for the culinary sophistication of its diners. But, recently, good old American food is coming back.
spacer
Several new, upscale restaurants have turned to American-style food, featuring steaks, chops etc., instead of arugula and truffle oil, at fairly high prices.
spacer
However, there are some good old-timers that have been serving American home-style food—the kind your mother made— for a long time, at low prices (you can eat well for under $10).

Hamburgers are probably the most important staple of the American diet, even more than fried chicken or pizza. Most hamburgers are eaten in fast-food places such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Carl’s Jr etc. It is no exaggeration to say that the American hamburger diet is an unhealthy one, especially when accompanied with French fries only, and both hamburger and fries are cooked in trans-fat laden oil.
spacer
But there are San Francisco restaurants where one can get hamburgers of much better quality, if at a slightly higher price.
spacer
Two of my favorite San Francisco Hamburger Restaurants have their own in-house butchers, and use only USDA Choice beef, the higher quality sold (the supermarket beef is mostly lower-quality USDA Select). In the many editions of my book, San Francisco on a Shoestring, I favor such places. I also favor hamburgers with at least 1/2 lb of ground beef, since I consider that amount, with fries, and/or salad, a satisfying meal.

Americans probably consume more beef per capita, after the Argentinians, but it is mostly in the form of hamburgers, since good roasts and steaks are too expensive for most.
spacer
If one can find a good steak in San Francisco for $20, or less, that would be considered “affordable,” maybe not for everyday eating, but for the occasional binge. Fortunately, this is possible.
spacer
Personally, I prefer a dry-aged Choice steak to Prime, since it does not have as much fat, but can be tender and quite tasty. Some San Francisco steak restaurants offer Choice-quality steaks because they consider Prime too fatty.
spacer
Here are several good San Francisco steakhouses, with prices below $20 for some cuts, and not much above $20 for large cuts.
