Tasting Small-lot, Hand-made Wines in Rutherford, CA

Known as “AO” to its fans, Alpha Omega was founded in 2006 and has quickly drawn enthusiastic kudos and high ratings for its small-lot, hand-made wines.

AO is owned by Eric Sklar, whose family has grown grapes in Napa Valley for decades; and Robin Baggett, who successfully developed more than 800 acres of vineyards in California’s Edna Valley before helping to start this venture.

Sklar and Baggett purchased 12 prime acres of Rutherford land that contained an old winery, and immediately undertook an ambitious remodeling plan.

The result makes for a spectacular winery visit. Surrounded by lush vineyards and rising mountains, the building combines rustic beauty and elegant modernity with a relaxed ambience.

The brightly-lit tasting room is stunning, offering high ceilings, a white-marble bar, warm finished wood walls, and a 13x15-foot window that overlooks Highway 29 and the Mayacamas mountains.

Outside, on a covered patio furnished with couches and plush chairs, you’ll gaze upon the natural rock trimmed reflecting pool with its five spouting fountains.

Robin Baggett, a lawyer, was General Counsel to the NBA Golden State Warriors from 1993 to 2001.
