San Francisco Wine ToursNapa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours-------------------------------------------------Opus One was founded by “wine royalty”—France’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Napa Valley’s Robert Mondavi.
In 1978 the two men sat down with a yellow legal pad and, within an hour, had drafted a joint winemaking venture. Their goal: to combine their winemaking approaches to produce a world-class Bordeaux-style Cabernet blend.Only one wine is produced each year under the Opus One label (another wine, Overture, is produced under a second label). Today Opus One is jointly owned by Constellation Brands and Baroness Philippine de Rothschild.A visit to Opus One is a luxurious experience with a European flair. After turning onto the long driveway lined with olive trees, you’ll notice the round and massive limestone winery building; commanding a man-made hilltop, it’s surrounded by immaculate grounds and manicured vineyards.
Before you step inside you’ll hear the sound of classical music (probably Vivaldi). Once through the doors, check in for your appointment with the concierge. Then it’s off to the high-ceilinged, opulently-furnished Partner’s Room for a taste of the current Opus One vintage.Lounge on comfy couches surrounded by orchids and 18th century antiques, or you may prefer to take your glass to the upstairs terrace with its fabulous 360° views.
