Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
-------------------------------------------------
In 1992 Gavin Newsom started a San Francisco wine shop, PlumpJack, with the financial help of billionaire Gordon Getty, a family friend.
Numerous successful restaurant and retail ventures followed—including The Carneros Inn in Napa and the PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn—and in 1995 Newsom and partners purchased PlumpJack Winery (the former home of Villa Mt. Eden Winery).
The name PlumpJack, given to many of Newsom’s enterprises, is intended to evoke the roguish spirit of Shakespeare’s character, Falstaff, nicknamed “Plump Jack” by Queen Elizabeth I.
Many first-time visitors, aware of Getty’s involvement, are surprised to discover that PlumpJack Winery is not a gargantuan, marble-floored palace. After traversing narrow roads that wind through thick vineyards, you’ll find an attractive but unpretentious room with a cozy bar.
It’s a popular place with a high-energy buzz. On warm days, the lovely vineyard-surrounded patio is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine. A gift shop is fun to browse in, and you’ll probably find something you just have to have.
Fascinating Fact:
When he took office in 2003, PlumpJack Owner Gavin Newsom was the youngest mayor of San Francisco in 100 years. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of California in 2010.
