A Napa Valley Winery and Tasting Room
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
-------------------------------------------------
This small winery, owned and operated by the Chafen family, was named for a 19th century mercury prospector and horse thief who lived in the surrounding hills.
The owner and staff at Dutch Henry have taken the area’s Wild West past to heart, often posing for photos in old-time cowboy gear complete with six-shooters. But Dutch Henry is serious about making wine.
The Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot grapes are organically grown and hand-harvested at the family’s 22-acre Chafen Vineyards, while grapes for other varietals are sourced from outstanding Napa vineyards. Dutch Henry produces about 6,000 cases each year.
The tasting room is small; it’s really just a space in the barrel room, where you’ll be overlooked by towers of French and American oak. While the working winery goes about its daily business, you’ll be entertained with stories about the wines, the winery, the Silverado Trail, and get to taste Dutch Henry’s notoriously Big wines.
The wine caves are also open for tours (but make an appointment).
Fascinating Fact:
The original Silverado Trail once ran through the Dutch Henry property, and the notorious stagecoach robber Black Bart frequented this road for his holdups.
