A Napa Valley Winery near the Silverado Trail

Joseph Phelps was part of the “New Wave” of winemakers who came to Napa Valley beginning in the late 1960s.

Phelps is credited with introducing numerous “firsts” to the Valley’s wine industry. For example, in 1974 Phelps produced one of the first Napa Syrah wines as well as the first Bordeaux-style blended red wine (the 1974 Insignia).

The large and beautiful redwood winery sits atop a hill with a view of Spring Valley, the nearby town of St. Helena, and, in the distance, the towering Mayacamas Mountains. In the spring, the winery’s huge trellis—constructed from century-old bridge timbers—is covered with wisteria. On sunny days, the covered tasting terrace is the place to sample wines; it offers stunning panoramic views across the vine-covered hills and much of Napa Valley below.

Before coming to Napa Valley in the early 1970s, Joseph Phelps ran a nationally-recognized construction company based in Colorado.
