Hilltop Napa Valley Winery on the Silverado Trail
Napa Valley & Sonoma Wine Tasting Tours
-------------------------------------------------
Airline pilot Koerner Rombauer and his wife Joan purchased 40 acres of tree-filled hilltop land on the Silverado Trail in 1972. They had no intention of growing grapes, let alone crafting exceptional wines; the move was all about settling into a good location to raise their kids.
But as they grew into the community one thing led to another, and in 1982 they put in their first vines. Today Rombauer wines are known and praised around the world, with their Chardonnay considered one of the finest available.
Perched atop a hill, Rombauer offers an expansive view of the Napa Valley from many locations, including the deck of the tasting room. The gardens are wonderful, and you’ll also find outdoor sculpture, walking trails, and a small picnic area.
An extensive cave system extends for nearly a mile into the hillside, and is a top attraction on the winery’s tour.
The small tasting room is extremely popular with visitors, so be prepared for crowds (it’s a good idea to come early, when they first open). You’ll probably want to browse the autographed photos of celebrities like 49ers coach Bill Walsh, Garth Brooks, Barbara Streisand, sound-barrier-breaking pilot Chuck Yeager, and others.
Fascinating Fact:
Koerner Rombauer’s great aunt Irma Rombauer authored the internationally-renowned cookbook, The Joy of Cooking.
